Tom Martin, Former Board Treasurer, The Greensboro Historical Museum

Accounting Overhaul Positions Museum for Success

The Greensboro Historical Museum is a treasure in the community, but it’s accounting systems and budget structure seemed as antiquated as some of its exhibits. As the museum’s CPA firm, Gilliam Coble & Moser had worked with the organization for several years on its annual audits and various advisory projects. Last year, the firm worked with the museum’s board on an overhaul of its accounting, internal controls and budgeting systems.

“Our staff was working with internal systems that had evolved over the years with no particular order or logic,” said Tom Martin, former board treasurer. “It was important that we make it easier for all of our stakeholders to see exactly how funds were moving through the organization, so Gilliam Coble & Moser helped us completely reorganize our processes and procedures. We simplified our recordkeeping and bookkeeping, and our systems are now configured so that our financial information is easily accessible. Our books are clean and understandable, and we know exactly how we’re doing at any point in the year.”

The cleaned-up systems have had a positive impact on the museum in other ways, too. Thanks to the accounting overhaul, last year’s audit was done in record time!

“Gilliam Coble & Moser has done exceptional work for us,” Martin said. “They’ve truly made a difference in the way the museum does business.”
